Pregnancy: how to take good care of your face and skin?

It is common knowledge that during pregnancy, women must be extra vigilant about the products they use on their face, body and hair. The ingredients to be avoided are wide-ranging: endocrine disruptors, essential oils, synthetic fragrances, allergens, silicones, overly aggressive surfactants, etc. To be sure to use safe cosmetics during these nine months of pregnancy, you can turn to organic & natural brands. Most of the ingredients to be avoided will already be avoided in the formulas and to go further, certified organic cosmetics for pregnant women are a must! Otherwise, you can also continue to use your Kadalys skin care products since they are adapted to future moms!

What skin care products should you choose to take care of your skin during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, the skin of the mother-to-be is put to a severe test. The body's physical and hormonal activity is turned upside down and the skin sometimes has trouble keeping up... Apart from these possible body discomforts, the mother-to-be must pay special attention to the care she uses. Why should she do this? Simply because the ingredients in cosmetics can cross the skin barrier and disrupt the functioning of hormones. This is what is commonly known as an endocrine disruptor! Once present in the body, they can mimic, modify or alter the action of a hormone and cause complications during pregnancy. It is estimated that about half of unborn babies are potentially exposed to endocrine disruptors present in the cosmetics used by their mothers... A bit scary, isn't it? Sulfated surfactants, synthetic fragrances, PEGs or mineral oils are also ingredients to be put aside. The problem? The list doesn't end there and choosing your moisturizer becomes a real obstacle course. Especially when you don't know how to decipher the INCI lists! To limit the quantity of undesirable ingredients in beauty products, future moms can turn to organic products. The charters of the various labels prohibit a good number of ingredients considered dangerous for health and for the skin!

Are there any products that should be avoided during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, we are not really talking about products to avoid but rather about cosmetic ingredients not to use! To illustrate the situation a little, classic moisturizing creams often contain mineral oils, derived from petrochemistry. On the skin, they provide a feeling of hydration in the short term. On the other hand, on the long term, they tend to leave residues of petrochemistry in the body... The traditional shower gels as for them often contain sulfated surfactants. Sulfates, under the pretty name of "Sodium Laureth Sulfate" or "Sodium Lauryl Sulfate" are among the most irritating and most allergenic! On sensitive skin, such as that of pregnant women, they can cause severe irritation.

If we were to mention only one type of product not to use, we would certainly choose essential oils as well as products that contain large quantities of them. Although some are safe and some are recommended to pass nausea, most are still dangerous to the baby's health. For an accurate list of essential oils to avoid during pregnancy, talk to your health care provider.

How to properly moisturize your skin during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, the skin never stops stretching to give the future baby the space it needs to develop. To prevent the skin from cracking, pregnant women must therefore be particularly diligent about moisturizing their skin. A good hydration of the body allows to stimulate the elastic fibers (elastin) and the collagen, responsible for the appearance or not of stretch marks! Indeed, pregnancy hormones tend to disrupt the body and skin mechanisms: the functioning of elastin and collagen are upset. The two hormones have more difficulty in supporting the skin, which is where stretch marks appear in areas of tension: hips, thighs, stomach and breasts. To moisturize the body and stimulate the skin, pregnant women are advised to use sweet almond oil. Moisturizing, softening and soothing, it is perfect for calming itching caused by skin stretching. Shea butter can also be a great body moisturizer. Rich in fatty acids and vitamins, it nourishes, moisturizes and soothes the skin while promoting its elasticity!

Kadalys moisturizing creams can be used to moisturize the face. The fragrances used in all our products are eco-certified, 100% natural and have all been tested for safety. Although they contain essential oils (naturally present in flowers), they are not irritating to the skin. These oils are so small in the composition of the perfumes that they represent only 0.2% of the final product! Kadalys cosmetics are therefore suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

What is the pregnancy mask and how to avoid it?

The pregnancy mask is a hyperpigmentation of the skin that affects most pregnant women. This mask results in small brown spots on the face mainly located around the nose, forehead, cheekbones or the top of the lips. The cause of the mask of pregnancy? Another hormonal upheaval! The production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of the skin and hair, will be increased. This overproduction of melanin will make the skin of the mother-to-be more sensitive to the sun and this is how the pregnancy mask appears! To avoid seeing your face covered in brown spots, you should remember to wear sun protection as soon as you step outside. Also ban photosensitizing products from your beauty routine!

If, despite your best efforts, a pregnancy mask appears on your face, don't worry, it should go away on its own after 6 months!

The choice of cosmetics used during pregnancy is important. To avoid all types of ingredients that could be dangerous for you or your baby, turn to organic and natural brands!
