I) The origin and meaning of Mother's Day in France
Mother's Day, as we know it today, has its roots in various ancient traditions, notably those of Ancient Greece. Indeed, the Greeks honored Rhea, the mother of all gods, during a spring celebration. Rhea, considered the goddess of motherhood and fertility, received offerings and prayers in recognition of her maternal role and nurturing power. Over time, these traditions evolved and became integrated into different cultures, influencing modern Mother's Day celebrations.
In France, the history of Mother's Day began to take shape at the beginning of the 19th century, when Napoleon first mentioned the idea of a day dedicated to mothers in 1806. However, we had to wait a century more late for this idea to actually come to fruition. In 1906 , the first Mother's Day was celebrated although it did not yet have official recognition. This day was only finally integrated into the French calendar in 1950, following the initiative of General De Gaulle and the law of May 24 of the same year which stipulates: "The French Republic officially pays tribute each year to mothers French women during a day dedicated to the celebration of Mother's Day.
Since then, every last Sunday of May is dedicated to paying tribute to all mothers in France. However, it happens that this date is moved to the month of June due to a particular event: Pentecost. Indeed, when Pentecost falls on the last Sunday in May as in 2023, Mother's Day is then postponed to the first Sunday in June to avoid a conflict of dates. Thus, Mother's Day has become a tradition well anchored in the hearts of the French who take the opportunity to get together as a family and pamper their mother with special attention: gifts, flowers, etc.
II) Mother’s Day around the world
This celebration of maternal love and the importance of mothers in our lives exists well beyond French borders. In other parts of the world, unique traditions and fascinating stories surround Mother's Day. From the United States to India to Australia to Mexico, this special day is honored in many countries with a deep sense of appreciation and gratitude. It is also known by different names, such as "Mother's Day" in the United States, "Día de la Madre" in Spain, or even "Laetare Sunday" in Ireland.
In the United States, for example, it is the second Sunday in May, while in Spain it is the first. In Mexico, the festivities extend over two days, May 9 and 10, and the streets are decorated with garlands, colorful balloons and fragrant flowers, creating an atmosphere of contagious joy and festivities. However, regardless of the country, its culture and its customs, one thing is certain, Mother's Day is a universal opportunity to thank, and to show our mothers how much we love them. Whether through thoughtful gifts, thoughtful gestures, or simply sweet words and warm hugs, Mother's Day is a special time to honor the extraordinary women who hold a special place in our lives.
III) How to celebrate mothers in an eco-responsible way?
Now that we have explored the history and traditions of Mother's Day, it is time to address an equally important dimension in our times: eco-responsibility. In a world where environmental protection has become a primary concern, why not make our Mother's Day celebrations more respectful of the planet?
If you have chosen to offer flowers, it is a very good idea and we suggest you turn to seasonal flowers such as Peonies, Lilies or Germinis.
You can also adopt the homemade trend: it's good for the planet and for your wallet! For example, you can offer your mother a kit to make her own candles at home, or make her own gift: a personalized chocolate bar with her favorite flavors.
It’s also an opportunity to choose more sustainable gifts to introduce your mother to committed brands. Among the many brands that embody these values, Kadalys stands out for its strong commitment to sustainability and ethical innovation. Indeed, we recycle “ugly and single” bananas rejected by the food industry by using them in our products. In addition, we favor recycled and recyclable packaging to minimize our environmental impact. Our formulas are mainly certified organic and of natural origin, obtained by eco-extraction according to the principles of green chemistry.
